Everyone wants to be a superhero.

Except for Alden. He wants to be a sidekick. He’s got his reasons, but the path ahead won’t be an easy one.

Even if he’s lucky enough to become one of the few humans who are granted powers by the extraterrestrial system that’s been running things on Earth for decades, true battlefield support classes are rare, and old-school sidekicks haven’t been popular in years.

But Alden’s got determination on his side…and maybe a murderous demon, too.

** This story has stats, but they don’t appear in the early chapters. This is a slow burning story. It’s character-driven. It will be long.

**The protagonist is a child in the first chapter, but he will be in his mid to late teens for most of the story. Lots of violence. Some darkness. This is fiction for adults and/or young adults.

**It will update once or twice a week once I burn through my backlog. Please consider supporting with a follow. Collapse

#panic# this is not the first novel where whole paragraphs of "<<text>>" are replaced with single "<" sign on ranobes, like in ch. 26, and author uses "<<text>>" quite a lot from this chapter onward.

Pretty unique. A 'grounded' superhero novel with MC not gaining insane strength from some cheat(which is rare nowadays).
Author seems to specialise in tragedies and slice of life, describing character's thoughts according to the situation.
When "tragedy" chapters strike, the thoughts are pretty chaotic and there's some madness seeping into characters. Not really a new concept but I believe this author does it pretty well.
Slice of life aspects are also handled pretty well, school life, jokes, friends that talk and have their story, different minor events happening here and there and friendly competitions class on class.
There's also decent attention to secondary characters, like the guy spending night to tell his story to friends. The guy who believes MC has some plan to stand out and do things for attention and we have can read his POV from time to time.
Some things happening in the background that MC is not aware of have dedicated chapters as well.
So, the world doesn't revolve only around MC, making secondary characters self sustainable.

The power system. Initially you think it's just a typical system novel but it expands on it pretty fast. A good explanation for magic. Word chains are tied into some concept of prayer.

Not only book has huge potential, but it's also good right now as it is.
Not in my top 5 list yet due to how much I read but should be pretty close to top 10.

Alden smiled into the next wave. “I want to use my magic to protect myself and stay alive. And I want it to be a life that’s worth living. How does that sound?”
“What does ‘worth living’ mean?” Stuart asked solemnly.
“Not endlessly shitty and full of horror,” said Alden. “Joyful. A lot of the time. I really need it to be that, or I’m not going to be strong enough to do anything at all.”

This is what this novel is about, it’s about a normal person with normal needs and goals. This is what makes this novel stand out so much and makes you feel connected to MC. One of the best novels I’ve read, truly a masterpiece!

Really good novel with a proper lawful good good-oriented MC, around the age of 15... Don't expect too much OPness, at least in the beginning, and also no Xianxia cultivation-like character who only cares about 'benefits'. The book is a modern novel, with modern mindset characters and a proper story. The majority of ranobes audience won't like this, saying how MC is weak, or how there is no big-brain giga Chad planning and scheming. This novel is NOT of that genre. Think more along the lines of a slice-of-life action novel. Superhero dynamics has been overhyped by the intro and doesn't play much role, YET... Will have more focus in the future but more largescale things are happening than Earth's superhero dynamic. Give it a try, its along the lines of Mother of Learning and The Wandering Inn. One of my fav books rn.

PS- free to read on Royal Road, books pirated here may have formatting issue as well as typos which were later fixed by author.

This to say this not a trash, "read cause I'm bored and need filler novel". This is potentially a future great. While you might want to let it cook for a while longer (despite it being ~1000 pages already) .when you do get around to it I think you will greatly enjoy it. To be prepared though its a slowburner so don't expect anything approaching instant gratification or constant "numbers going up" styled goings on.
Instead you can expect a coherently crafted world, and challenges to the characters that leave behind realistic scars and consequences. Not to say the story is grimdark or emo, but much like say, The Wandering Inn, those tragedies, and sadness are as much a part of the human condition as the happy, or diligently training ones, and thus also present in the novel as appropriate to telling a compelling Story.

I like this novel sadly something has gone wrong and you cannot read a good bit of the things that other people say when it's said through the system so that sucks

Big meh novel. Only read to 24 and while it has potential, it’s been fairly boring so far. MC has little power, and little ability to gain power. Could see the author trying to leverage his niche abilities into OPness but it’s a stretch.

Plus, state of MC and worldbuilding goes against general Ranobe enjoyment.

Yeah, that's world building from a guy who read 24 chapters...
Anyways, the story is pretty good, really values it's characters and makes most valuable to the plot characters have their own stories. It gives an explanation to system and to human-allien interaction later on and it's not that bad.

      Oh, btw,
      MC having no power

Is a huge stretch because you've barely read a prologue of the novel. He's still a kid and of course he wouldn't be slaughtering adults because of some OP skills like most authors do. This one is more grounded.
It's also sliced of life, even if in superhero society.

It is indeed the world building of the first 24 chapters. I also didn’t say the story was bad, just boring to me, and IMO most ranobes readers would enjoy it.

MC doesn’t need to actually be OP to have power, it’s more his state - an indentured servant who is given abilities that lock him into a role. I thought maybe the author would make him work around it by giving him an ability that he can finagle into being useful in combat, an example like “clean” which he uses to remove attacks like acid, for example.

It’s definitely a character focused story (again something a majority of Ranobes readers don’t particularly care about), but the prologue is meant to hook you, and I found his character boring. He has very little freedom - no way to make his own choices and choose his own path. I wasn’t engaged.

It’s been a while since I read it. Lots of good reviews of it.

Don’t know how me saying he has no power is a stretch considering he literally had no power by the time I quit.

Regardless, I’m glad you are able to enjoy it.

So, you quit in chapter 24(don't actually remember when it was but it was probably before any development of his powers) and he just gets his ability and you complain it's weak.
Would you complain about weakness of a child in novels that start with rebirth?
