Just as a gamer found an overpowered skill book called ‘Item Upgrade’ in the hottest virtual reality role-playing game on Earth, something happened to the game’s system, causing his soul to leave his body and go to another dimension. Common sense dictates that he would be born anew then become the greatest overlord of this world by making use of his advanced knowledge. Not in this case! He was already dead. Only some fragments of his soul and that skill book managed to get into that dimension and merge with an ordinary common youngster called Bai Yunfei.

This was the enormous Tianhun continent, where humans could be said to have no limits. There was a group of humans here who could cultivate the power of their own souls then control their bodies, the natural elements and even other people’s souls with that power! These special beings were called — soul cultivators. Come witness how the several fragments of the dead inter-dimensional traveler’s soul and that skill book, which was not governed by the laws of this plane, were going to help Bai Yunfei become a legendary soul cultivator and craftsman! Review from 290

I'm depressed seeing how unlucky the MC is, theres a limit of how much I can tolerate [Upgrade Failed] [Item Destroyed].

Might as well kill the MC over and over again till it cleanse all his bad karma he's bearing, So he can have normal LUCK.

I might drop it if story stays the same

This novel is one of the first chinese novels I ever read. 3rd I think? After King of Gods, and I Shall Seal the Heavens. Looking back these years, I can't believe how lucky and naive I was to luck out with some good ones or I would have just quit and gone back to re-reading Steven Brust, Jordan, Glen Cook, Dave Duncan, ect.

This is one of my favorite cultivation novels as well. It starts with a boy ending up getting a cheat - a piece of a gamer's soul collapsed and scattered through the cosmos. It got bonded to the boy, and his cheat allows him a chance to "upgrade" an item a little bit based upon his spiritual strength. Making a piece of jewelry upgrade his intelligence or something. Too much, or unable to control it, the item is destroyed.

Now this has the classic plotline. The MC joins a sect known for refining items, makes friends and they go mission together. It has a beast arc that is one of the best I've seen, with the MC staying and communicating there in the beast lands a long time. Good cultivation system that is reasonably explained with the power creep. No harem - the MC falls in love and woos a girl that he eventually marries told throughout the story.

The larger plot isn't all that complicated, there are some evil sects rearing their heads and eventually sect wars. The MC shines and battles in spectacular fashion. The good guys are supportive and nice, the evil guys obvious. Not too complicated. And the power of friendship. Simple plotlines, but interesting and well written imho.

Honestly, I don't know where the bad reviews are coming from. This is more of a light novel, it makes you feel happy to read it, and contains all the classic plotlines told everywhere, but is older than most. The MC is not an arrogant moron like Asura Martial God, Peerless Martial God, ect who can't step outside without provoking a fight. He acts like a normal, balanced person.

Aye... Stupidity is universal. That truth transcends both Japanese and Chinese. Let's not be too discriminating, shall we? I simply assume that this Chinese author has simply been overly influenced by some childish Japanese Isekai.

So much potential, and I mean SO MUCH potential was wasted on this piece of crap.

If you look at it objectively, this is an average (or maybe even above average) book. The problem is that the high(ish) quality of the book is entirely due to how awesome the premise is. This book is the embodiment of "great idea, terrible execution".
Why is it that all the best ideas come to the worst authors? This could have been absolutely amazing, but it turned out just "decent".

Examples of why it's so bad include:
    1. The mc leaves his enemies alive unless absolutely necessary.
    2. The mc of "Upgrade Specialist in Another World" barely uses his upgrade abilities later on.

Tbh, those are the only two problems, but they're pretty f#cking big problems. I have only read to chap 120, so it might get better later on, but as of now it's just turned into a regular cultivation novel and he hasn't used his upgrade system in 50 chapters.
