Like, you think your kingdom isn't going to kill villagers too? It's an actual valid if not morally ambiguos tactic. One that can be exceptionally effective. 1) No villagers = no new soldiers/food for the enemy. Every idiot who ever played an RTS, watched a documentary or studied war knows that logistics are half the battle. 2) Attacking a village is tactics 101 to draw away the enemy. Julius f#cking Ceasar burnt down half of France and forced the locals to give up a siege on a Roman fort. This is just one irl example of the tactic being employed.
