Chapter 183: Element ary, My Dear.

"My name is Elore, and I'll be your instructor for this lecture," The woman said, "Welcome to your orientation."

It seemed that little bit of showmanship had caused Merlin's stream to explode, but upon looking closer, most of the spam consisted of the word "Mommy".

'Oh dear god,' Merlin thought to himself as he turned his attention back to the lecture.

"I'll begin by listing each of the elements, and in turn, I'll give you a little bit of insight about myself," Elore said before taking another sip of her pipe.

Elore exhaled the smoke directly into the air, where it took the form of a small wyvern that began flying around for a few moments before dissipating.

"As you can see, I control smoke. Well, this is partially true," She said, "Rather, this is an advanced application of the air element, one of the six elements that a wizard can utilise."

"Air, Water, Fire, Earth, Light and Dark," Elore spoke each word out slowly, "These six elements make up the primal forces of this world, and as wizards, you will eventually learn to harness and weave this power to serve your own purposes."

"This is not to say that you can harness all of them at once. No, the life of a single human is much too short to even grasp the true mastery of one."

"Instead, you will dedicate yourself to one of the six elements, this is a process that we call attunement." Elore declared, "You will infuse your body and soul with your chosen element before setting out on the endless journey of magic."

A couple of the students let out faint noises of excitement, while others seemed to groan with anxiety.

"Some of you may be wondering how you will know if you made the right choice or not, or if you could change your element at a later time." She said, "The answer to that first question is that you'll likely know when the time comes, and for the second, while unnecessary in most circumstances, the answer is yes, although there are a number of caveats one must take into account if they decide to do so..."

"For now, I'll briefly cover the six elements and their functions, but the act of selecting the right element for you is often intuitive," Elore said before exhaling more smoke into the air, forming peaceful clouds above her head.

"We'll start off with what most people consider to be the most destructive element, Fire."

"Often considered wild, destructive and unpredictable, Fire is often the first element a young wizard has in mind when considering combat magic."

"The power to summon balls of fire, generate scorching heat, or summon white flames that burn so hot they can melt through armour. Fire is suited well for a battlefield, but if you wish to utilise this magic, be wary you do not lose control for the results may be catastrophic."

Most of the students seemed convinced that fire was for them, based on their excited muffled squeals.

It was understandable, throwing fireballs was one of the most iconic aspects of magic.

"Then we'll move on to the antithesis of fire, Water. The element of adaptability, often considered to be more suited to a support role on the battlefield, however, do not underestimate the combat potential of a water mage."

"It doesn't need to be said, but the power to protect from, and extinguish, flames are very valuable abilities to have due to the popularity of fire magic. The domain of water also gives access to that of ice and snow. Spells of which hold incredible value in a wide variety of circumstances."

It seemed as though the teacher was leaning pretty heavily into the countering of the fire magic part, it was likely that too many wizards continued to choose the fire element each year and she was making an attempt to balance it out.

"Next, we'll talk about my element, Air. The element of freedom and mobility. Often disregarded and thought of as the weakest element amongst those without a strong grasp on magic."

"While it is true that air cannot split the earth in half or set countless forests ablaze, those who underestimate an air mage are often helpless when their feet are swept from under them by the raging force of a tempest." Elore said, "Some who practice this element eventually learn to harness the raw potential of the storm, allowing them to invoke the destructive force of lightning."

As she spoke these words, the clouds of smoke hovering above her head had darkened and the sound of rolling thunder filled the room, causing several students to audibly jerk back in their seats.

"Now, the sturdiest of the elements, Earth. The element of resilience."

"This is another element that is more support oriented in the eyes of many."

"Earth users often focus on defensive magic rather than offensive, but that is not to say that an earth mage cannot deal significant damage when required."

"For an element of magic that is so rigid, the earth element tends to have the widest reach in domains. Those who lean into earth magic may even find themselves influencing nature to a degree, and those with dwarven ancestry may find that you resonate well with crystals and ore."

"Now, this next one may overlap somewhat with the powers granted through faith, the element of Light."

"The element of purity, one that encompasses not only the power of healing and purification but also the destructive potential of light."

"This element is very popular with members of the temple with magic potential, as it blends well with the powers granted to them by their gods and is very effective against some of the more dangerous enemies of humanity, such as the undead and demonic creatures."

Merlin immediately thought of Bibar, the Hecate worshipper who ravaged a large group of the undead with a rain of golden fire.

"And last, but definitely not least, is the element of Darkness."

Merlin perked up, knowing for certain that this was the path he'd go down once more.

"Foolish individuals may consider the dark element to be that of evil, due to how many terrible monsters in this world harness it, but the dark element is just like any other."

"It is the user who bends the magic to fit their evil intent, not the other way around."

"The dark element is one of the least researched elements due to this stigma, but it holds domain over most of the magic you've likely heard about in stories.. The power of curses, the power to weave shadows, and although considered taboo by the temple, it also covers the power to raise the dead."

The room was suddenly filled with hushed whispers at the mention of necromancy. This was a hot-button issue due to the recent fall of Laconia at the hands of a large horde of undead and the sudden emergence of the Necropolis in its place.

"Silence," The teacher ordered after a few moments, causing the room to quickly quieten down. "While yes, even though it may be considered controversial, the dark element is still a very viable source of magic."

"Now, moving on to how one acquires that source. Let's briefly talk about attunement," She said, "Now, I've previously mentioned that attunement is the act of infusing your body and soul with your chosen element, now how we go about this is somewhat of a complicated process."

"There are a couple of steps that a wizard must take before acquiring attunement. The first step, and arguably the most important one, is that your soul must achieve proper resonance with the elemental magics of your chosen type," The teacher explained, "Some of you may know of this as the elemental trials, but for those unaware, it will be better explained once it is your turn to take the trials."

"After completing your trial, the next step is to then infuse your soul with the chosen element," She explained, "You will be given a list of items that you must collect for the attunement ritual. Once you return with the items the attunement ritual will commence."

Upon her first explanation ending, Merlin received a quest notification.

    ┌───────────────────

    [Common Quest]

    Attuned to the Elements I.

You've learnt that the next step in your wizard journey is to acquire attunement to a chosen element.

Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Light or Dark.

These six elements make up the primal force of the world and learning to harness one of them will increase your power exponentially. The first step is to conquer an elemental trial, but to challenge it you must first improve your control over magical energy.

Speak with an instructor in the attunement room about taking an elemental trial.

    • Requirement: You must have a level 2 or higher magic soul with the ⟪Attuned Element⟫ skill equipped to challenge a trial.

    • Reward: 200 Wizard EXP

    └───────────────────

Merlin clicked the accept button on the quest window before continuing to listen to the lecture.

"With that, does anyone have any questions before we move on?" Elore asked before glancing around the room. It seemed as though nobody raised their hand, so she moved on to the next topic.

"Next up, we'll talk about what most of you are excited for," She said in a somewhat sarcastic tone, "The library."

"The library of this school is incredibly vast. Not only does it contain a wide variety of magic tomes, grimoires and spellbooks. It contains a copy of almost every book that had been circulated around the major cities before the crisis." She explained, "There are also thousands of original copies of documents and research notes that you can access, some more dangerous than others."

<br/>"Now, all of these resources are free to access, of course, but a large majority of them have been sealed away until you improve your rank within the school, as indicated on your badge." She said.

A couple of groans could be heard from the crowd, it seemed as though some people weren't fond of the idea that they wouldn't be able to learn incredibly powerful magic out of the gate.

"This is for your safety, so don't be too disappointed... The last thing we need is another beginner wizard trying to learn gravity magic before mastering mana control." She muttered out loud, "Our poor cleaners have enough work as it is without having to scrape the flattened remains of students out of the crevices of stone brick."

"Now, do we have any questions in regards to the library?" Elore asked. "And before anybody asks. No, I will not explain the gravity magic situation in further detail."

It was at this moment that Merlin raised his hand, causing the instructor to look at him.

"Just the one question then, very well," Elore said. "What would you like to ask?"

"Of all the books and documents within the library, would any of them hold information on the ruins of this city?" Merlin asked.

"Oh? You consider yourself a bit of an archaeologist?" She said with a surprised look, "I suppose there would be some, although most of the information from that period has already been lost to time, so I'd doubt it'll have exactly what you're after, but you may be surprised."

"If you're truly interested in the ruins, stick around after the lecture." Elore said with a cheeky smile, "There may be a teacher here who would love to meet with you."

Hearing these words caused yet another quest notification to appear before Merlin.
    ┌───────────────────

    [Hidden Uncommon Quest]

    Archaeology Club.

Your question posed to Elore during the orientation lecture had surprised her but seemed to also give her an idea. She claims that she wishes to introduce you to a teacher and that if you're interested she would do so after the lecture ends so long as you remain in the room.

Speak with Elore after the orientation lecture ends.

    • Reward: 50 Wizard EXP

    • Failure: The quest will be removed.

    └───────────────────

Merlin was a little surprised that his question gave birth to a quest, but after reading over it, he accepted the quest and gave Elore a nod, indicating that he had no further questions.

"Very well, now if nobody else has a question, we'll move on to the next topic." She said, "Extracurricular classes and activities."

"This school holds a large variety of classes that you can take. Our most popular ones are alchemy and rune crafting. Enchanting is rather high on that list as well." Elore explained, "Apart from those, some teachers occasionally hold classes to teach certain spells, although this may be restricted based on wizard rank or an appropriate price tag."

The mention of wizard rank caused groans once more.

"Something I failed to mention previously, but will bring up now since it's still relevant." Elore said, "You can learn and use spells outside of your attuned element."

"If, for example, you decided that fire was the path that you decided was suited for you, any fire spells you learn will be influenced and benefit from that attunement." She explained, "If you also knew a spell from the air element, you would still be able to use that spell, however, it would be cast as if you weren't attuned at all."

"There is however an exception to this," She said, "Spells of the opposite element to your attunement will become harder to cast."

"Using our previous example, a fire wizard attempting to blast an enemy with a torrent of water will have to use twice as much mana to cast the spell." Elore explained, "This is due to the fire element within the user's body fighting against the water element infused mana."

"The two elements are diametrically opposed and in most normal cases can never truly coexist." She said, "Although exceptions are always the case, such as the existence of an undead priest."

"Magic is truly a paradoxical existence that humanity will no doubt struggle to fully comprehend even hundreds of thousands of years from now..." She muttered before inhaling smoke from her pipe once more.

pᴀɴda nᴏvel "Finally, we'll cover extracurricular activities," She said, "I've spoken plenty about wizard ranks, but never mentioned how one may go about upgrading their rank. Well besides just attending classes, here's where extracurricular activities come into play."

"Here at the wizard college, both students and teachers engage in research to further their understanding of magic. This research oftentimes requires materials or labour, and you may obtain points towards your wizard rank by providing them."

"Teachers often require an assistant or two during their research, experiments or rituals. If you're up for the task and meet the requirements, you may be temporarily hired to participate." Elore explained, "Other times, they may need materials that cannot simply be found within the city, or a specific task completed and may request that someone perform the task in their place."

"Lists of these requests can be found in the task hall, and every completed task can be exchanged for points, along with any other rewards stated on the task sheet." Elore explained, "Students can also submit requests at the task hall, as long as they have the points or other items to submit as a suitable reward."

"And finally, once you've received enough points, you can spend them to upgrade your rank." She exhaled another cloud of smoke, "This will grant you access to more advanced classes and resources. Perhaps even better tasks if ranks are listed as a requirement."

「You have completed the quest, "Orientation day!", rewards have been delivered.」

"With that, your orientation is now complete," Elore stated, "Now go research the world of magic to your heart's content."

      185 Hey there Dalai

The room was quickly filled with the sound of students scampering out of the room as quickly as they could.

Merlin sat in his chair and watched as Elore blew smoke rings into the air before exhaling a cloud of smoke that quickly took the form of a small dragon. Her little smoke dragon flew through each smoke ring before dissipating into the air.

At that moment, the doors closed and the only two people in the room was Merlin and the instructor.

"Well, since you've decided to stick around, I'll take it that you're interested in meeting this teacher," She said before extinguishing her pipe. "Follow me."

Merlin hopped up out of his chair and made his way down several steps and rows of seats before reaching the stage.

Upon climbing the small set of stairs onto the stage, and making his way over to the teacher who was waiting for him, he found that he was quite a bit shorter than her.

He was previously looking at her from a high angle, and while she did seem rather tall from a distance, he didn't expect that she would be a head taller than him, even without the heels she was currently wearing.

Elore gave Merlin a small smile before making her way to a door hidden behind the stage.

Merlin followed her while taking a glance at his stream once more, only to internally sigh in disappointment at his viewer's behaviour.

Elore led Merlin through the room behind the stage and into another door that led into a hallway. She made sure that he was following her before she started moving again, quickly navigating the building and leading Merlin down a flight of stairs.

Merlin tried to memorise the path they were taking until Elore suddenly stopped in front of a door.

pᴀɴda nᴏvel "And here we are," Elore said before tapping her pipe on the door.

A few moments later, Merlin heard the sound of paper being rustled before the clicking sound of a door lock.

Elore took a step back moments before the door quickly swung open, and a woman with messy blonde hair, large round glasses and dark bags under her eyes stuck her head out of the room.

"What do you want?" She crankily asked Elore with a tired tone in her voice.

It seemed as though this person had either not slept for a very long time or was just rudely woken up from her attempt to sleep. Either way, she didn't seem happy.

"I'm here to introduce you to a new student," Elore said in a bright and chipper tone, it was clear that she was trying to annoy the angry teacher, perhaps she was just using Merlin as a reason for doing so?

"They asked me about the ruins in this city, and I thought you were the perfect person to talk to," Elore said, raising her voice before turning to Merlin, "Meet Dalai, you two are likely going to be the best of friends."

Elore said that moments before scampering off, leaving Merlin with the very angry looking Dalai.

'Woooow, that was petty.' Merlin thought to himself.

<br/>Dalai turned to look at him, the dark bags on her face emphasised her bright green eyes, they almost seemed to be faintly glowing.

"Are you actually interested in the ruins of this city, or is she just making a fool out of me?" Dalai muttered.

"Probably both," Merlin said, "I am interested in the ruins, but I haven't been able to find much information about them... Actually, I'm most interested in the door frame near the rangers guild, the one that glows during a full moon."

Dalai's eyes lit up as Merlin muttered those words, and as a smile grew on her face, a notification appeared before Merlin.

「You have completed the quest, "Archaeology Club.", rewards have been delivered.」

"You truly do understand!" She remarked, her previous cranky attitude was suddenly nowhere to be seen. "Although, I've got a theory that it's not actually a door frame, but serves as some kind of--"

"portal to another dimension." Both Merlin and Dalai spoke at the same time, causing Dalai's grin to widen even further.

"Sorry, I didn't get your name," Dalai said, reaching her hand out for a handshake, although her hand was barely peeking out from her oversized robe.

"It's Merlin, nice to meet you," Merlin said while shaking her hand.

"Merlin huh? What a wonderful name for a wizard." Dalai said before disappearing into her room. "Come in, I want to show you something,"

Merlin followed her in but found that he was wading through scraps of loose paper that had fallen onto the floor.

"Don't worry about damaging those, they're all garbage theories," She said while running towards a table that had a chunk of rock floating above it.

"Here, take a look at this," she said, pointing to a large sheet of paper spread over the desk and the floating rock. "I traced out the text above that door frame, and this piece of rock is part of a destroyed statue in the abandoned temple in Acacesium."

"I had requested some students go out and retrieve a piece when I read a report from the rangers guild about what happened during their raid." She said, "It detailed that all the statues had been destroyed, and since it's a major sin to destroy the statue of a deity yourself, I figured it'd be okay to take a piece of one that was already destroyed."
"And look at this, the statues used to stand on podiums that had their names engraved in them, some of the letters used in this name match the letters used on the door frame." She said, pointing at the engravings on the rock.

Merlin quickly glanced at his chat when he noticed highlighted text.

[MOD] Quinntessential: Hey look, @Atlas, they made you as an NPC.

      └───────────────────

"Unfortunately, I don't know which god this text is referring to, so I'm no closer to mapping out the language or translating the text on the door frame." She said, "So I'm thinking that I'll likely have to visit the temple myself, rather than send people out to collect samples for me."

"The only issue with that is that I'm not very well suited for combat, so it isn't safe for me to enter the wilderness alone." She said, "You mentioned the rangers guild earlier, would it be safe to assume that you're the same Merlin mentioned in the rangers guild report?"

"Yeah, I was there," Merlin said.

"I knew it. Well, I'd like to put a request in," She said, "Would you be willing to guide me to the abandoned temple near Acacesium?"

      Revisiting the Acacesium temple.

An archaeologist within the wizard college is researching the ruins of Megalopolis. She has discovered that the shattered statues in the abandoned temple near the frontier town of Acacesium may hold secrets that could help her with her research.

Safely guide Dalai to the temple near Acacesium and back.

"Absolutely," Merlin said, accepting the quest immediately.

"Wonderful!" Dalai said, "I'd like to set out immediately if that's alright with you?"

Merlin nodded in response, which caused her to scamper around grabbing a few materials and stuffing them into a bag.

"Give me a moment to get ready," She said while grabbing a staff that was slightly taller than she was.

While Dalai continued searching for items, Merlin swapped his equipment out. Replacing his staff with Ghostsaw's blade and the wolf's fang.

After Dalai finished getting ready, she led Merlin out of the building.

"Oh, by the way. I'm an earth mage who focuses on defence in a fight," She explained as she scampered out onto the street, "so I'll support you as best as I can if we run into any trouble."

"Alright, sounds good," Merlin said while tapping his daggers, "I'm a front liner of sorts, so I'll be fighting in melee range."

The two made their way to the gate leading into the wilderness, and after greeting the guards who were standing by, they made their way through the gate and onto the path to Acacesium.

"Give me a moment please," Dalai said before taking a few steps off the path and kneeling on the grass. She began chanting while rotating her staff, and a few moments later the ground began to gently rumble.

Rocks and dirt began floating into the air before suddenly being compressed into small hardened shapes, those shapes were then crushed against others until the form of two horse-like creatures took shape.

With the tap of her staff, both horse golems seemed to suddenly spring to life.

      "Earth golems?" Merlin asked.

"Yes, they'll cut our travel time down tremendously," She said, "You didn't plan on walking there, did you? We'd also have to worry about carrying stuff back."

Merlin didn't say anything in response, he just hopped up on one of the golems after Dalai had signalled for him to do so.

With the wave of her hand, Dalai had caused the two horse-like earth golems to start marching forward.

"I would recommend holding on," Dalai said while tightening her grip on the earthen beast.

Merlin took her advice to heart and did the same, and a few moments later the horses started picking up speed.

The benefit to travelling on golems rather than living creatures was that golems could travel great distances with consistency, they didn't run out of stamina or faint from overexertion, they were essentially just machines that utilised mana as fuel.

It seemed as though Dalai had utilised quite a bit of mana to manipulate both these golems, as they were now running at speeds much faster than what most horses could ever do.

While the scenery was flying past his vision, Merlin glanced at his chat, seeing what was going on there.

Merlin swiped the window away and turned his attention back towards Dalai, who seemed to be showing early signs of mana exhaustion.

Merlin was somewhat impressed that she had held on for such a long time. It was clear that her mana pool was tremendous when compared to his own.

The two arrived at the abandoned town of Acacesium a few minutes later. Both Merlin and Dalai unmounted the horses, which were then promptly unsummoned.

Merlin watched as the two horse golems dissolved into piles of dirt beside him, and Dalai wiped the sweat from her brow with her oversized sleeve before drinking what appeared to be a mana potion.

"My god. This place really is abandoned, huh?" Dalai said while looking around the town, "It's one thing reading about it in a mission report, but it's something completely different when you see it first hand..."

Dalai spent a few minutes silently wandering around the abandoned town. She began exploring the houses, taking a look at the state they were left in and ended up accidentally scaring a family of foxes when she wandered into a room that was occupied by the creatures.

<br/>Although it seemed as though Dalai was even more frightened than the fox mother, as she had stumbled backwards and knocked several pieces of cutlery off the kitchen table, causing the foxes to run out of the house.

"Oh, no. I'm sorry little foxes..." Dalai muttered as she watched the foxes leap out of a window and disappear. "...I didn't mean to scare you."

Dalai's slowly waddled out of the building with her head held low, it seemed that exploring the village was putting a damper on her mood.

"Well, instead of getting depressed. How about we pay a visit to our actual destination?" Merlin said while pointing to the large temple in the distance. "That runic text isn't going to decode itself."

pᴀɴda nᴏvel Dalai nodded and followed Merlin as he made his way up the hill towards the temple.

Merlin cautiously took a look inside the building first, but there didn't seem to be anything within it that immediately caught his attention or set off any red flags.
The two walked into the temple, where they were greeted with rows of shattered statues.

"Oh wow, this place has seen better days," Dalai quipped while skipping towards what seemed to be the base of a statue, there was a partial nameplate on the base, the other half of which seemed to have been shattered into tiny stone fragments that laid at Dalai's feet.

"A couple of these letters match up, I wonder whose name it was." She muttered before hovering her hand above the pile of shattered statue fragments.

After muttering a brief incantation, the stone shards began floating into the air, coming to a stop while hovering over the palm of Dalai's hand.

The stone shards seemed to be clashing together, slowly reforming into the state they held before being destroyed.

It took a few moments, but the other half of the nameplate had actually been fixed, and with another incantation, was slowly attaching itself to the base, forming what they both believed to be the name of a god in ancient Arcadian.

"Right... I still can't read it," Dalai muttered while sketching down the runes. "We'll have to build the statues so I can figure out which god is connected to which name."

Dalai pointed out that a set of feet were attached to the base, and that they just had to build the statue up with puzzle pieces that fit,

Both Merlin and Dalai had started picking up chunks of the statue, with Dalai focusing on repairing anything she could.

"That won't fit, that's clearly a woman's thigh and that's the torso of a man," Dalai started pointing out mistakes as the two tried figuring out which body part fit the specific statue they were trying to repair.

It was at the moment that Merlin had picked up what seemed to be a handful of stone grapes that he realised which god they were in the process of building.

"Dionysus. This text means Dionysus," he said while handing Dalai the stone grapes.

"Well, I figure out those letters, but there isn't much else I can get from this." She said while attaching the grapes to the statue.

Before they continued, Merlin pointed out the statue that he remembered Callisto getting angry at last time, the one that had a shattered stone bow in front of it.

"There's Artemis," Merlin said while pointing towards the statue base.

Dalai started repairing what little damage the nameplate had taken, but she eventually fixed it and started filling out more runes in her book.

"Very well, I'll take your word for it for now," Dalai said before moving on to the next one.

The two spent the next ten or so minutes piecing together various statues until the identity of the god or goddess could be confirmed. After being confirmed, their names were added to the list and then they would move on to the next statue.

This continued several times until they came across a statue in much better condition than some of the others. This one seemed rather odd, as the base of the statue clearly showcased six feet, all facing away from each other.

Merlin saw various heads, torsos and legs scattered about the temple floor, it was clear to see which god this was, just based on the statue's base.

"This is clearly..." Merlin muttered to himself before Dalai had walked over to him with the shattered upper torso of a goddess that was carrying a torch. "Yeah, that's clearly Hecate."

Once again Dalai had repaired the nametag and started filling in runes when her eyes suddenly lit up with excitement.

"Merlin, Merlin, Merlin," Dalai shouted for Merlin to come and look at what she had found, it was as if her previous moment of sadness was but a mere illusion.

When Merlin peered over her shoulder at what she had found, he noticed it immediately.

"One of the words in the door frame, the entire word is just Hecate's name?" He muttered out loud, causing several things to click in his mind in that instant.

"Wait, then that means..." He muttered to himself once more, "Doesn't she?..."

"We worship her today as mostly the goddess of magic, but back in the day it seems she was much more popular for her other domains," Dalai said while jotting down notes, "The goddess of crossroads, who was also affiliated with the moon. But most of all, she was renowned as a goddess of the underworld and of the dead."

"A guardian who guides the dead to the afterlife with a torch in hand," Dalai muttered, "Although since necromancy is a taboo topic, that part of her is rarely ever mentioned."

"Then is it a portal to the spirit realm?" Merlin muttered, realising what had happened. "A door without a key..."

Dalai's ears seemed to perk up at that last line, but before she could say anything Merlin continued talking to himself.

"But the key, in this case, would be your soul..." Merlin continued, "But then why didn't it allow the dagger or the goblin soul? Why is the door blocked?"

          187 Uncovering Ghostsaw's Secrets

Merlin immediately checked his quest information, and while immediately scrolling past the wall of text he was already familiar with, he saw a couple of extra lines added to the bottom.

          ââââââââââââââââââââ

          [Hidden Mythical Quest]

          A door without a key.

Within Megalopolis stands several ruins from an ancient civilisation...

          ...

During a full moon, a strange spectral film seems to fill the space within the door frame, and for some unexplained reason, souls and anything related to them are unable to pass through the door frame, whether that be souls themselves or even soul-infused equipment.

It seems as though this door frame has some connection with the goddess Hecate and the spirit realm. Her name is clearly written on the stone frame in what you believe to be ancient Arcadian. What is the purpose of the door frame, and why is it blocked off?

Figure out a way of opening the mysterious door frame.

          ⢠Reward: ???

          ââââââââââââââââââââ

'So... It's a portal to the spirit realm, of which Hecate has some sort of domain over... Right.' Merlin thought to himself, 'So it's likely that my interest in the door frame is the reason why she has suddenly taken interest in me, and why she requested me for help.'

'There is a very large likelihood that this has something to do with whatever had cut off Hecate's connection with the temple and the prayers of her worshippers.' Merlin thought.

'She suddenly returned after I messed around with the rift.' He thought to himself, 'Something must be preventing her from interacting with the world. But that shouldn't be possible, she's a boundary diety.'

'There are too many holes in that idea... What sort of barrier could stop a boundary god but be slightly inconvenienced by some serial killer's dagger?' Merlin shook his head, 'Unless the blade is a little more special than I originally thought... But that's doubtful.'

"Dalai, as an earth mage, you have a spell for identifying the material components of a piece of equipment, right?" Merlin turned and asked Dalai, who was busy repairing another statue.

"I can... Yes." She said while finishing a repair, "Is this important?"

"It's relevant," Merlin said while pulling the Ghostsaw blade out of its sheath, "I would like to see what materials this blade is made from."

Dalai reached out to take the blade from Merlin's hands, but it seemed the sudden drop in temperature from merely getting close to the blade had caused her to retract her hand in surprise.

"It's a little cold to the touch, don't worry," Merlin reassured her while handing the weapon to her once more.

"While I do this, you'll run around collecting statue parts to be reassembled, right?" Dalai asked.

          "Of course," Merlin responded.

Dalai had picked up the blade properly this time and sat down with it in her lap. When she began chanting and focusing her magic on the blade, it slowly began to hover slightly in the air.

<br/>Merlin let her do her thing while he started picking up chunks of rubble.

Several minutes went by, but the results of Dalai's investigation had come in.

"So? How is it?" Merlin asked.

"It's a special blade..." Dalai said while handing the blade back as quickly as she could, "First of all, it's clearly infused with the soul of a ghost."

"But not only is it infused with the soul of a ghost, but the blade also seems to have quite the strong affinity for the infused soul," She explained, "You see, it turns out that one-fifth of the blade is refined soul steel, which is why it has such a strong bond with the infused soul, any undead soul would."

'Ahh, that makes sense.' Merlin thought to himself. 'That's why it reacted so strongly to the portal in the first place.'

Soul steel is a special material that could be used in all manner of crafting recipes. It's a metal that had been fused with necrotic energies to produce a material that implemented aspects of both. Ores of soul steel rarely form in areas with high undead activity, such as in a crypt, a dungeon full of undead or even within a necropolis.

This ore could be mined by players for use in crafting, and it had quite a strong affinity with undead souls for the purposes of soul infusions. It was rather valuable for weapons in the early game, as it gave non-magical weapons the ability to damage certain ethereal creatures such as ghosts.

"Other materials that make up the blade are mostly regular sword steel, but there are traces of cobalt and tungsten mixed in..." She continued, "But, the most concerning material in this blade is what I believe to be blood... And lots of it."

'Oh, dear...' Merlin thought to himself, 'How am I going to explain that.'

"It's not even just that the weapon has been used to inflict several wounds in its lifetime... But blood seems to have actually been used as a material during its creation..." She said with a tremor in her voice, "Where did you get such a cursed weapon?"

"I received it from the corpse of a murderer who tried to take my life, but that's not the important part." Merlin said while trying to brush the whole blood thing away, "This blade is unable to pass through the mysterious door frame on a full moon... It's as if there's a barrier in the way that blocks souls and soul-infused items from crossing."

pᴀɴda nᴏvel Dalai's previously worried face had partially lit up at the mention of the door frame, and especially a unique behaviour that she was previously unaware of. Although it seemed that a part of her was still worried about the blood, and now the mention of a murderer.

"Alright, let's finish up here," Merlin said while sheathing his dagger. "We can continue this conversation on the way back to the city."

Dalai nodded and quickly went back to restoring statues, although it seemed to just be enough to read the name tag and get an idea as to which god the name belonged to. And after a little while, it seemed that they were finally done.

"Got everything you need?" Merlin asked.

"Yes, let's go back," Dalai responded.

As the two stepped out of the temple and made their way back to the abandoned village, Merlin started explaining what he knew about the door frame. But once he brought up the strange old man, that seemed to be the only thing that Dalai focused on, even when he had more things to talk about regarding the door frame, it was rather strange.

Dalai had stopped the conversation briefly while she began chanting a spell, causing rocks and dirt to float into the air before compressing into the shape of two horse-like golems.

The two got on a golem each and began riding them towards the city. For the first few moments, there was silence between them, but Dalai spoke first.

"A door without a key," She said, "Did you hear this phrase from that old man?"

Merlin looked at her with a curious gaze.

"Yes, I did," He said, "Has the old man said the same to you?"

Merlin naturally assumed that Dalai had encountered the old man at least once while researching the ruins. He seemed to be very interested in the same thing that both of them were interested in, so it was only natural that they would cross paths eventually.

Even Merlin had met the man twice, and that was on both occasions that he visited the portal during a fool moon.

"Yes," Dalai said, although it sounded like she was choking up slightly, "I've heard him say it once or twice."

The atmosphere between the two had gotten strange for a moment, but it quickly recovered and Merlin had finally explained more about the door frame, his antics with the dagger and also mentioned his experience with Hecate at the temple.

All of these points seemed to cause Dalai to go quiet as she thought to herself. It was likely that she would come to a conclusion similar to that of Merlin.

as the two rode silently towards the city, now able to see that the wall was only a small distance away, a red alert box appeared before Merlin, informing him that he had five minutes to log out or be forcibly logged out.

Merlin swiped the notification message away as the horse golems began slowing down. Moments later the golems had stopped near the wall, and once dismounted by their riders, dissolved back into a mound of earth.

The two walked towards the gate, greeting the guards as they stepped into the city.

ãYou have completed the quest, "Revisiting the Acacesium temple.", rewards have been delivered.ã

"Thank you, Merlin," Dalai said, "I'll be going back to my office to work on this translation. Feel free to pay me a visit at any time."

With that, Dalai began walking away from Merlin who remained near the gate.

"Take care," Merlin said before walking in another direction, he slipped into a more quiet location, where he told his stream that it was time to go. "Thanks for watching everyone, I'll hopefully see you all next week."

He turned his stream off before uttering the command to log out.

His body was quickly warped out of the game and into the black void, Merlin went through the many steps of logging out before the machine finally freed him.

After escaping his capsule, Merlin made his way toward the briefing room and took a seat in his usual spot, greeting the developers who were finishing off their briefing notes before everyone woke up.

            188 Happy Birthday Holly!

As the members of the first group began to enter the room, Arthur greeted his friends as they started filling in the chairs nearby where he was sitting.

The briefing was rather short, with the most important news being that wave four would begin next week.

This was the wave that contained many influencers, such as streamers, along with a wide variety of journalists that would be writing about the game from now on, with the strict exception of a few popular sites that Arthur had purposefully excluded.

This would also be the week where Holly and Quinn would take their first steps into the virtual world. But it was also the scheduled day of the group's first raid on the necropolis.

The briefing ended with the usual top four, but the knight that Arthur was familiar with, SaintMRP, had found himself in fifth place.

Once the briefing ended, all the groups began shuffling out of the room, while Arthur and his friends began talking about their cleric quest.

"It feels like a waste having this soul take up a slot," Alvira said, "It feels incomplete without the blessing."

"On the topic of blessings, what gods did you guys have a high affinity for?" Mason asked, "My highest was Hephaestus."

"God of the forge, yeah that makes sense," Arthur said while thinking of the giant war hammer that Mason used as his weapon, "What about the rest of you?"

"Hades!" Both Alvira and Acai spoke at the same time, before turning to each other.

"I had thirty-four percent favourability, how about you?" Acai asked.

"Thirty-seven percent," Alvira replied with a smug grin.

"Well, I've also got thirty percent with Dionysus," Acai replied.

While those two continued their back and forth, Liam spoke up, "Ares, I had thirty-two percent with Ares."

"Fifty-six percent with Artemis," Rowan said, "And then twenty-two with Hermes."

"Woah," several members of the group said in surprise.

That one made sense to Arthur. Rowan was the one archer of the group, and a woman no less, it was understandable why her number was so high.

            "Sixty-four with Artemis..." Maria muttered.

"What?" Both Arthur and Rowan retorted.

"Yeah, I don't know either. I don't even own a bow." Maria said with a sigh.

"Do you remember your second highest?" Arthur asked.

"It was thirty-something for Athena," Maria said.

"How odd..." Arthur muttered to himself.

"What about you?" Maria asked Arthur.

"That was a day ago, I can't quite remember." Arthur said, "My highest was Gaia though."

"Because of the plant thing?" Maria asked.

"Yeah, most likely because of the plant thing," Arthur nodded.

The group eventually split up, and Arthur made his way towards Donovan's car.

He checked for traps before entering the vehicle, and the two started driving home.

"Did anything interesting happen today?" Donovan asked after the usual polite greetings.

<br/>"I became a wizard and enrolled in a wizard academy," Arthur said.

"I thought you were already a ninja?" Donovan asked with a confused look on his face.

"Well, I could become a magical ninja," Arthur shrugged.

"A ninja that hides in the shadows, only to reveal himself immediately by throwing fireballs," Donovan teased, "Yeah, I see that working out pretty well."

Arthur shook his head before explaining how the magic system worked briefly, listing out the six elements that you could specialise in and what sorts of things they would allow you to do.

"Ah, so you'll pick the dark element to help you sneak around in the shadows," Donovan said.

"What about you? What would you pick if you were a wizard?" Arthur asked.

"Fire, it just has to be fire," Donovan said.
            ᴘ.ᴀ.ɴᴅ.ᴀ n.ᴏ.ᴠ.ᴇʟ

            "The classic wizard," Arthur said.

"Of course, nothing says fantasy more than a bearded old man in a robe hurling a giant fireball at a dragon," Donovan said, "Although, lightning is pretty cool too. It's just too bad it's tied to air."

The car eventually pulled up next to Arthur's house, and he made his way inside after saying goodbye to Donovan.

He made his way upstairs and started his usual routine. He hopped on his computer eventually, but before he started playing games, he started the application process for partner status for his stream.

Two days of school flew by without much happening. Some people outside of Arthur's social circles had started talking to him, while Vasco was hovering around with an annoyed expression every time he saw Quinn walk by.

He didn't seem to appreciate the fact he was banned from the stream and seemed to be looking for an opportunity to express his displeasure directly at those who banned him. Unfortunately for Vasco, however, Arthur's group seemed to be the centre of attention, making it impossible for him to act without being seen.

On Wednesday, after arriving at school early in the morning and making his way to his locker, Arthur ran into his two friends, Holly and Quinn.

"Good morning," Arthur said moments before pulling a small box out of his schoolbag.

He quickly reached back into his bag to pull out the adhesive ribbon bow that had fallen off, and after sticking the ribbon back onto the box, he handed the box to Holly.

"Happy birthday," He said with a smile.

"Thank you," Holly said while receiving the gift.

Quinn immediately started looking over her shoulder as she started opening the box, and the first thing that came to her attention was a large gift voucher.

"See? I told you that you're hard to buy gifts for," Quinn remarked. It appeared that he was referring back to a conversation they had prior to Arthur arriving.

"Gift voucher?" Arthur asked while looking at Quinn.

"Gift voucher," Quinn repeated while nodding, he then looked back over to Holly who was now looking at what else was in the box, the rest of the gift that was hidden under the voucher.

pᴀɴda nᴏvel Inside the box was a large pile of stickers of varying colours, styles, shapes and sizes.

"How many stickers did you get? Jeez." Quinn remarked while watching Holly, who wasn't even half way through the pile of stickers.

"There should be about five hundred I think," Arthur said while thinking, "There might be a couple of duplicates, but most of them should be unique."

Quinn coughed when he heard the number before shaking his head.

Holly seemed to be making a pile of her favourite stickers at the top of the pile, most of which just seemed to be the cute caricatures of the Egyptian gods that he bought the entire set of.

"I love them," Holly said while still flicking through the stickers, "But, I don't have enough space to put them on."

"You've sticker-bombed almost everything in your room already, so I guess save them for when you get a car?" Quinn suggested.

"Well, it turns out you're allowed to customise your capsule at the facility," Arthur said, "So feel free to sticker-bomb it on Saturday."

The mention of Saturday caused both of them to smile, it was clear to see that they were excited to finally play New Genesis.

The rest of the day flew by, as did the next Thursday, both days ending without anything out of the ordinary occurring. But on the following Friday, the last day of school for the week, something different happened.

"She actually took a day off from school... I can't even remember the last time she did that," Quinn said to Arthur, "And this time she isn't even sick."

The two closed their lockers and began walking to their first class.

"It just goes to show how important this is to her," Arthur said, "Although, I wonder which one she'd have picked if it was a choice between the museum's private opening day and her first day in New Genesis."

"Probably still the museum," Quinn answered immediately.

"Yeah, you're right. Stupid question." Arthur nodded his head.

The two checked their phones throughout the day, and their group chat had received several updates and even a few pictures, although none of the pictures were taken from inside the museum, likely due to their strict camera policy.

"Sounds like she's having fun," Arthur commented as the two were making their way to their last class for the day.

"We're stuck here doing math while she's enjoying her time in a museum," Quinn groaned before reading a new message, "Oh, and they're going to dinner after visiting the museum store."

"Well, you could have always tried to catch the interest of a princess too, I've invited you to enough events," Arthur said while poking fun at his obvious jealousy, "You always said no."

"Yeah, I wouldn't fit in with those fancy parties, and they sound extremely boring," Quinn muttered, "Also, isn't it always you who messaged the group chat saying that you'd rather be anywhere other than at those events?"

"It probably would have been more tolerable if I had a friend there to talk to." Arthur shrugged. "Who knows what could have happened."

The two entered the classroom for their final class.

              189 Wave Four Begins

Holly and Maria didn't come online for the rest of the day, and her regular posts stopped after they had left the museum.

The next day, Arthur made his way to the facility.

After saying goodbye and leaving Donovan's car, he walked towards the building while scanning over the even larger crowd that had formed around the building compared to the week prior.

There were several new faces, and some that he recognised, notably the streamers and lets-players that were invited to play.

There were a couple of news vans parked around, and several people who weren't part of the beta but were likely associated with some of the journalists who were invited had set up temporary pop-up gazebo tents and folding chairs near their vehicles.

It seemed as though a couple of the journalists and their teams were conducting interviews with some of the willing players, some experienced players from the earlier waves and others who hadn't yet stepped foot into the virtual world.

He noticed Quinn and Holly standing around near the interview tents, alongside Maria and Acai.

Arthur approached the group and immediately noticed how excited Quinn looked.

"Hey guys, what's up?" Arthur asked, "And why does Quinn look so excited?"

"You know that streamer he's been obsessed with?" Holly immediately answered Arthur, and then pointed at one of the interview tents where an attractive brunette was sitting."

"Oh, right," Arthur muttered to himself while nodding his head.

"Do you think it'd be rude to ask for a signature?" Quinn turned to Arthur and asked.

"I've got no idea, just... Don't make it weird," Arthur said with a pitying look in his eyes.

"Don't make it weird... Got it," Quinn muttered to himself while waddling awkwardly closer to the interview tent.

Arthur shook his head and turned to the rest of the group, where he noticed that Holly was playing with her new bracelet. It was a silver bracelet with a simplified design of Khepri's symbol engraved into it, a scarab beetle holding the sun.

"Maria's birthday gift?" Arthur asked, "It's cute."

"Yeah, I love it!" She said with a smile, "She also bought me a giant dinosaur plushy."

"How giant are we talking?" Arthur asked.

"I had to leave it in the car while we went out for dinner, here let me show you a picture." She chuckled while pulling out her phone.

What Arthur saw was a large stegosaurus plushy that was almost as big as Holly was, taking up a large area on her bed.

"That's a big dinosaur." He muttered.

              "Yeah, he is," She giggled.

"You excited for today?" He asked.

"Yup!" Holly responded immediately, "I've memorised all the tips I've been given."

"Don't open too many soul slots, don't attack NPCs or other players unless they hit you first, turn combat assistance off, pick a reasonable weapon at the start, and I know which quests I should be grabbing straight away and a vague idea of where to get them from," She started listing all the things she had been told while counting on her fingers, "And something about feeding a cat in a back alley."

<br/>"If you can find him," Maria spoke up, "He wasn't there last time I visited."

"We won't be able to meet up right away, but once you make it to Macedonia we'll see each other more." Maria finished speaking, "We've got the raid this session."

"On the topic of the raid, where are you again?" Acai asked Arthur.

"I'm still in Megalopolis, I'll be making my way to Macedonia after a quick visit to the wizard college." Arthur replied, "Are you guys all in Hysia?"

"We're all in Macedonia I think, Mason said something about doing a blacksmith quest before we parted, so I think he's still in the city at least," Acai responded.

"Alright, well you guys are going to have to entertain yourselves for thirty minutes while I make my way over there," Arthur said.

              "Is that him?"

              "It looks like him."

Arthur heard whispers from the direction of where the interviews were taking place, and as he turned his head he saw a couple of people staring at him.

He averted his gaze temporarily after noticing Quinn waddling back with a bright smile plastered on his face.

"Did you get a signature?" Arthur asked him as he rejoined the group.

"Nope," Quinn responded, which made everyone's expression contort into a look of confusion.

"Then why are you...?" Arthur muttered.

"I didn't have anything for her to sign, but she promised to sign something I brought tomorrow," Quinn said, "I'm not sure if I should bring my poster or the limited edition keyboard."

"You mean the keyboard you haven't cleaned in a year?" Arthur retorted.

"The one that is growing its own ecosystem underneath its keys?" Holly joined in, "That one?"

"Poster it is..." Quinn said as he lowered his head in embarrassment.

A couple of the people who were doing interviews had slowly approached Arthur, and were now hovering around him.

"You go by Merlin, right?" One of the interviewers asked, to which Arthur simply nodded his head.

"We'd love to interview you, the first person to share a glimpse into the game world." Another interviewer said.

Arthur saw the doors to the facility open just in time, giving him a valid excuse to deny the interview.

"Unfortunately, it seems you've caught me at a bad time, I've got to go." Arthur said with a slight smile, "Maybe next time."

"Oh, of course," An interviewer muttered as Arthur's group walked away towards the doors.

"Unfortunately, we still have to wait an hour or so until we can get in," Holly muttered as Arthur, Maria and Acai followed a group of people into the facility.

Quinn seemed pretty disappointed when he was reminded of this fact.

"You also get to leave the game an hour after us too." Arthur turned around and said, which brightened Quinn's expression somewhat.

"Don't forget to add us after you log in," Maria yelled out, "You know my username."

Arthur's group made their way into the briefing room and took their usual seats while the developers were preparing.

"So, you had fun on your date?" Arthur asked Maria, whose face had turned bright pink after he asked Holly about the bracelet.

"I did," Maria muttered while partially covering her face, "The museum was a great idea, thanks."

"No problem," Arthur said as his gaze shifted to the developers who took to the stand.

The briefing started, and it seemed as though they were trying to speed things along so that everyone could get into the game faster.

There was mention of the fourth wave, how a large portion of the new players were influencers or journalists, and that new protections and moderation were being temporarily added to improve their first impressions.

There was also a mention that the server wouldn't be up for a few minutes, as Gaia was still implementing a new update that even surprised them as it didn't seem to be a bug fix, but rather an automatic content update.

This caught Arthur's interest, as he wasn't sure what the update was about or if he was the cause of it, and it didn't seem as though the developers had any idea just yet either.

Eventually, everyone was led into the capsule room and was sent into the virtual world, or rather, just the white room he was familiar with. The server wasn't open yet, so he decided to check out the private lobbies once more. As usual, there was the default lobby for beta testers, which Arthur joined.

Arthur's surroundings went dark, and once he opened his eyes, he found himself at a beach resort with a nice tropical climate.

"I wanted the cat resort again," Arthur muttered to himself with a sad tone before walking straight towards a nearby tiki bar.

"I'll have a pina colada with no alcohol, thanks." He asked an NPC working at the bar, and once he received his drink, he sat down on a lawn chair and waited for the game to finish updating.

Several minutes later, the server came online and everyone suddenly dropped everything while rushing to join it.

Arthur finished his drink before slapping the join button, where he was once again thrust into the darkness, before reappearing where he had left off previously.

Merlin found himself in a quiet location within the town of Megalopolis.

He quickly started his stream right away as the approximate hour window where he'd be the only one streaming was one of his only advantages now that he couldn't monopolise the market.

There was still the benefit of being more skilled and performing more interesting feats, which would help him retain and even gain additional viewers, but the streamers with dedicated fan bases would have their viewership regardless of what Merlin did, and it was an unfortunate fact that he would lose a chunk of his viewers to them because of it.

But the other influencers would likely draw in a crowd that didn't view Merlin's original streams, and there was still the chance he'd grab the attention of curious drifters who wanted to see what other people were up to while their favourite influencer was learning the ropes or doing boring things like travelling.

"Hey guys, I'll just be getting ready for the big raid today. We'll be raiding in about half an hour or so," Merlin announced to his stream, "So stay tuned, we'll be taking a shot at the Necropolis."

With that, Merlin made his way towards the wizard's college once more while reading chat.

It was only now that he realised he didn't have any other moderators for his stream, as both Holly and Quinn would be joining him in-game very shortly.

190 Stocking up on quests again.

Merlin made his way toward the plaza where he saw a couple of robed figures carrying yet another group of ice sculptures away from the wizard college.

The culprit this time was sitting on a chair in the plaza while a smaller man in a pure white robe was tending to her wounds.

It appeared as though the aggressor had managed a single lucky hit on the wizard, as there was a bloody dagger lying on the plaza floor and the wizard's robe was clearly stained with blood.

"Bloody immortal bastards, I'll get Pyrena to incinerate their corpses next time." The ice wizard swore as Merlin walked towards the building. "I won't be satisfied until I watch them choke on their own ashes."

'That's an ice wizard with a fiery temper,' Merlin thought to himself as he slipped into the wizard college.

Merlin walked toward the receptionist's desk, where an older man was sitting patiently, waiting for Merlin to approach.

"Good evening, how can I be of service?" The receptionist asked with a kind voice.

"Hello, could you please point me in the direction of the task hall?" Merlin responded.

"Certainly," The old man said before muttering a brief arcane chant.

A few moments later, a ball of light had appeared before Merlin and began moving in the direction of a doorway.

Merlin thanked the older man before chasing after the orb.

Fortunately, the location of the task hall wasn't too far away, and only after a couple of turns Merlin had found himself in a large room, oddly reminiscent of an adventurer or mercenary guild, albeit without the strong scent of old booze and smoke.

The room itself was somewhat packed, from individuals covered in various coloured robes to some wandering around in generic clothes, to even the one individual who was walking around wearing a full suit of armour.

There was a large desk at the far end of the room where several robed figures were sitting and speaking with those who approached.

There were large bulletin boards lining the walls that were covered in sheets of paper that had been loosely pinned to them, each containing a unique task, the name of the requester, a list of the rewards and sometimes a list of requirements that one had to meet to undertake the task in the first place.

Instead of doing what many of the other wizards in the room were doing, standing around staring at the walls of quest forms, Merlin walked directly towards the desk, and after waiting in line for a few moments, was greeted by one of the people sitting behind it.

"You didn't come with a form, did you come to make a request, or do you wish for a specific task?" The robed figure asked.

"I'd like a specific task, or a couple of tasks if more are available," Merlin said, "I'll be travelling to the Necropolis, I'd like to know of any tasks involving undead or other tasks specific to that region."

"The Necropolis, give me a moment, I'll take a look," The robed figure said before muttering a chant.

<br/>Several strands of mana extended from the man's fingertips, attaching to various forms throughout the room before they were suddenly reeled in.

Several sheets flew towards the robed man, stacking neatly in a pile in front of him.

"Let us take a look, shall we?" The man asked before flipping through the quest forms.

"Hunting down a demi-lich?" The man muttered to himself before glancing at Merlin, noticing his badge he quickly shook his head and threw the sheet onto a new pile.

                "Vanquishing a Gravekeeper? No."

                "Defeating an Undertaker? Certainly not."

The man shuffled through the stack of forms until only six remained.

"These are the remaining forms, which would you like to take?" The man asked while spreading them out for Merlin to see.

"Claws of a ghoul, the flesh of a zombie, vampire fangs, ectoplasm, skeleton bones..." Merlin mumbled to himself as he read the quest requirements out for each, "and the arm of a zombie?"

"Strange tastes, but it's not my place to judge," The man said, "So, what would you like? There's a line forming."

"I'll take them all," Merlin announced.

"Overzealous," The man muttered as he stared at Merlin with annoyance. "Eh, what the hell, it's your funeral. Another zombie for the Necropolis..."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Merlin said as he grabbed all six quest forms.

Several notifications appeared before him, and he accepted them all.

'Alright, that's nine hundred and seventy experience, eight hundred and twenty wizard experience and five hundred and fifteen wizard points,' Merlin calculated everything in his head. 'Oh, and one gold.'

He took his forms and made his way out of the wizard college, quickly finding his way into the plaza where he saw no trace of the ice wizard or the vindictive players.

While he started walking towards the road to Macedonia, Merlin glanced at his chat, seeing what was going on there.

"Hey guys, I'll need a couple of new mods, Is anyone interested?" He said to the camera orb floating around his head.

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

[User] Invictus_1863: Sure, but what happened to the other two?

[User] SaintMRP: Sure! I'll do it.

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

"The other two are going to be in the game playing in about an hour, they can't moderate the New Genesis stream anymore." Merlin said, "And Saint, aren't you going to be logging in soon? Like in five minutes?"

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

                [User] SaintMRP: Yeah.

[MOD] Quinntessential: Hey, we're still here!

[MOD] Quinntessential: And look who joined us.

[System] Moderator Quinntessential added BellaBambi as a VIP.

                [VIP] BellaBambi: Helloooo everybodeeee~

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

'Oh dear god, he's using my stream to flirt with streamers.' Merlin thought to himself while shaking his head.

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

[User] ... : Is that the real BellaBambi?

[User] ... : I clicked on her profile, and it is.

[User] ... : Bambi, are you going to be playing New Genesis too?

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

'And with a single greeting, she took over my stream chat," Merlin internally sighed, 'That's the power of fame I guess.'

Merlin made his way to Macedonia, he occasionally checked his chat just to see what was going on, but it seemed as though the streamer was there to stay, at least until she was allowed into the game.

'If he tries to invite her into our party, I'll hit him...' Merlin thought to himself, knowing exactly what was running through Quinn's mind at that moment.

He quickly sent Quinn a private message.

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

[Priv] Merlin: Don't even think about inviting her to our party...

                [Priv] Quinntessential: Huh, why not?

[Priv] Merlin: I'm not going to waste time and resources carrying her, it's obvious what's going to happen.

[Priv] Quinntessential: She's a famous gaming streamer, she'll be a good teammate.

[Priv] Merlin: Remember that time you added that spy into our guild because you thought "she" was cute? And then "she" stole all our guild loot and ran off after you carried "her" to max level and equipped "her" in all the best gear.

[Priv] Quinntessential: Wait, it's not the same. She's got thousands of viewers watching, she wouldn't do that, it'd hurt her reputation.

[Priv] Merlin: You own a poster of her, her overpriced themed keyboard and that dirty mousemat of her that you hide every time your parents enter your room.

[Priv] Merlin: Dude, you're a mark. You know full well that her fanbase won't criticise her for anything outside of announcing that she has a boyfriend.

                [Priv] Quinntessential: ...

[Priv] Merlin: It's not happening man, I know you're not dumb enough to fall for it again.

[Priv] Quinntessential: Fine... But I'm getting that signature before I do anything to offend her.

[Priv] Merlin: Feel free to blame me as much as you need.

                [Priv] Quinntessential: I will.

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

'That idiot never learns,' Merlin sighed to himself, then chuckled when he remembered how heartbroken he was about the spy who ended up being a guy twice his age.

'I can't afford to carry a leech, so he'll just have to live with the tough decision," Merlin thought to himself, 'My time and resources are one thing, but my viewer base would be something difficult to get back if she leeched those too.'

'He wouldn't be stupid enough to ditch us for her... Would he?' Merlin had a strange thought that started to worry him, but he pushed it to the back of his mind as he continued down the road.

Merlin glanced back to the stream chat, where he saw people finally talking about the game once more.

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

[User] Queen106: So you've stocked up on quests, what now?

[User] Invictus_1863: Time for the undead raid!

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

"Now we'll make our way to Macedonia, grab a few friends, maybe pick up another couple of quests on the way to the Necropolis." Merlin announced, "Then it's time to slaughter a horde of undead... and hopefully not all get mauled to death in the process."

As he was coming up to Macedonia, he received a message from Nora.

                ââââââââââââââââââââ

[09:40:32] Nora: Are you close to Macedonia?

[09:41:43] Merlin: I'm only a couple of minutes away, I can see the farms now.

[09:42:25] Merlin: Are you guys all grouped up?

[09:43:51] Nora: Mason is just finishing up on a quest, he'll be ready in a few minutes.

[09:44:23] Nora: I mean Tiny, sorry.

[09:44:46] Merlin: It's fine, I knew who you meant.

It's not, it's just that Webnovel developed a new software that makes it very hard to get chapters from there. But here ya go: found this by a recommendation: (https://www.panda-novel.com/details/restarting-from-genesis(EN)-1160) It's fully updated here.

Will it be explained in the next chapter why Merlin wishes to wield the darkness element I wonder, since intuitively one would assume that the light element would be better suited for the journey he's has embarked upon in order to solve the mystery of the Sky Splitting event.
