Chapter 291: Eye of the Storm

The crowd poured into the castle, their faces contorted with anger and resentment. However, as soon as the slum dwellers passed beneath the swaying skulls that hung above the gates, their fury turned cold.

In the echoing stone halls of the Bright Castle, it was hard to forget that Gunlaug's power was absolute. For as long as any of them remembered, he had ruled over the Dark City with an iron fist, elevating those who bowed to him and destroying those who did not.

Countless men and women had tried to challenge the Bright Lord in the past… great people, terrible people, and everyone in-between. It was their skulls that now stared at the crowd, darkness nesting in their eyes.

Finally, doubt and fear appeared in the hearts of the inhabitants of the outer settlement. Many of them stared at Nephis, their faces turning dim and listless.

Changing Star did not react to this sudden change in one way or another. Looking straight ahead, she calmly walked forward, an indifferent expression on her face. Her usual mask was in its place once again, preventing anyone from knowing her true thoughts.

Trying to remain unnoticed, Sunny made his way to the front of the crowd to be closer to Nephis, Effie, and Caster. No one paid him any attention. In the grand scheme of things, people thought of him as an insignificant piece, if at all.

Just like he wanted them to.

From his point of view, the atmosphere in the Bright Castle seemed to be a bit strange, and not because of the invading horde of slum dwellers. Its halls and corridors were too empty, too lifeless. He didn't see any people hurrying on their daily business, as they always would. Even the opulent desk in the entrance hall was empty, the clerk usually present behind it absent for some reason.

'Where is everyone?'

His question was soon answered.

Entering the throne room, he saw hundreds of Sleepers standing along its walls, waiting to meet them. It seemed as though the whole population of the Bright Castle had gathered here. There were the Guards, the Hunters, the Artisans, the quiet Handmaidens. Even people who paid tribute to remain in the Castle were all there.

Sunny noticed a few familiar faces. Stev, the large man in charge of the Memory Market, stood uncomfortably near the members of the Host. There was also Aiko, the owner of the gambling den, and many others whom he remembered from his brief stay in the Castle.

The air was tense and heavy. It seemed that not all of these people had come to the throne room of their own free will. Many of them had troubled, frightened expressions on their faces. Others were relaxed and joyful, waiting for an entertaining show with dark fascination burning in their eyes.

What disturbed him the most were the several figures of Nightmare Creatures standing among the humans. Those were the Echoes belonging to the inhabitants of the Castle, each one more terrifying that the other.

'...Why are they out of their owners' Soul Seas?'

On the raised dais at the far end of the great hall, illuminated by the false stars that were carved into the wall of the dark alcove, the four lieutenants of the Bright Lord stood. There was Gemma, the leader of the Hunters, Kido, the chief Artisan, and Seishan, who was in charge of the Handmaidens.

…and Harus, of course.

Sunny stared at the dreadful hunchback, who just stood there with his usual bored expression, looking at the wall.

He was pretty sure that today, at least one of them was going to die.

As if feeling his gaze, Harus suddenly turned and glanced at Sunny. This time, however, Sunny did not look away. He stared straight into the hunchback's glassy eyes, a calm and calculating expression on his face.

'I wonder how he killed all those people without being seen even once. With so many victims, somebody had to catch a glimpse of this butcher hard at work. What Aspect Ability does he possess? How do I counter it?'

Harus stared at him for a few moments, then tilted his head and smiled with strange amusement. A second later, he turned away and looked at the wall again, seemingly losing all interest.

Meanwhile, Tessai walked to the middle of the hall and threw Effie down, forcing her to kneel on the floor. Then, he gave Nephis a dark look and joined the other lieutenants on the steps leading to the throne.

The two hundred or so slum dwellers were standing at one end of the throne room, their faces grim and full of dark apprehension. With the exception of those directly serving Changing Star, most of them were dressed in dirty rags, with only a few wearing a proper armor. Some were unarmed, some had Memories or makeshift weapons hanging on their belts, and some even had swords hastily fashioned out of the talons of the slain Spire Messenger.

Opposite them, with their back to the throne, stood the people of the castle. Many of them looked like they didn't want to be here, but more had contempt and indignation in their eyes. Those were mostly the members of the Host, who were more than two hundred people strong. Each of them was clad in a sturdy Memory armor and wielded enchanted weapons. They were strong, well-fed, and experienced in combat.

The hunters, especially, were a formidable presence despite their comparatively small number. They were looking at Nephis with intense hatred, the memory of her killing one of their own in this very hall still fresh in their minds.

Changing Star stood beside Effie in the middle of the empty space between the two groups, looking at the white throne. Her ivory face was cold and indifferent, and her silver hair glinted in the rays of sunshine that fell through tall windows. Sparks of light were dancing in the depths of her calm grey eyes.

She was the focal point of everyone's attention and the target of the dark storm of emotions that raged between the ancient walls of the Castle today.

If it bothered her, she did not show it.

And then, finally, the Bright Lord himself appeared.

Sunny knew that Gunalug entered the great hall even before seeing him. He knew it because of the sudden change in the people that surrounded him. It was as though a wave of invisible pressure had crashed into the crowd, forcing them to groan and bend, almost buckling to the ground. Their legs trembled, their faces paled, and drops of sweat appeared on their skin, as well as fear and panic in their eyes.

The mastermind behind this ghoulish spectacle had finally arrived.

Those echos among crowd, maybe the king is keeping the people as hostages, if nephis lets him kill the hostages the faith of nephis' people will reduce and if she doesn't let him kill and agrees to his conditions the confidence of people on nephis will fall. Very cunning king indeed lshock

If Gunlaug is essentially unstoppable, why didn’t he just crush all opposition from the beginning? This has been a long drawn out affair that will only weaken him in the end even if he wins

There's maybe another reason we don't know abt yet but even without it, it's still logical

Nephis didn't do anything wrong, no crime he can put into justice so if he kills her and her allies, there would be opposition...and if he kills that opposition, there would be more,etc...it's a chain reaction with no ending

No ruler survived by only relying on fear, if he kills everyone outside the castle, even ppl inside will begin to lose all their trust in him...so he needed to crush their ideal, their hope and not the leaders

For example if you don't believe me: do you believe the idea of "black lives matters" was destroyed after martin luther king got shot, or did it get larger and stronger ?

None of them trust him anyways. They fear him. Completely different. The only people who trust him are the people who are close enough to him that they have zero to worry about anyways. Your analogy with MLK doesn’t work because this is not a democracy where the government can’t brutally oppress dissenters. It also isn’t real life where each person is roughly equal in power. If he were to forcefully go ahead and kill Nephis and her close supporters, it wouldn’t matter what any of the bums on the outer ring think. They wouldn’t dare to fight and they wouldn’t have the power to anyways. Also, by crushing Nephis, he crushes their ideals. Their entire hope is on her because she’s considered their goddess.

Yeah that was complete bs what you just said, you're just disregarding every human emotion as if humans were rational beings to begin with

          1) kasper or whoever that guy was called literally saw the bright lord as his saviour, same for everyone who works under him,
You don't rule with fear alone, safety is a must

          2) being stabbed in the back by your "trusted" subordinates is not a special occasion,
Ppl close to him could've just killed him if he became crazy to the point of killing everyone who has a diiferent opinion

          3) "equal in power" ? Since when do ppl in real life have equal power? The army could massacre any opposition if that came to be, never heard of the recent problems in for example congo ?

          4) ppl have shown many times to be irrational to the point of opposing forces they couldn't beat, open a history book, it aint like you wouldn't find one every 10 pgs

          5) in no ways do you crush the ideals of a group by killing the leader, i alr gave you the example
There are countless of stories abt leaders being killed while their ideals grew stronger bc of it, it even dates to the epoch of jesus and prob even before
I don't think christians lost fate after the person they saw as god got literally crusified

            1. I don’t really remember who that is.

            2. Maybe read further. I’m pretty sure it’s stated that
No one can kill him. And he’s not killing Nephis because she has a different opinion. He’s killing her because she’s subverting his rule and causing instability. Anyone who can rub two rocks together can see that she was clearly trying to build a power base.

            3. Simply understand that the gaps between two individuals is much larger here than it is in real life. So the analogies you try to bring from real life are almost always meaningless. If the president could obliterate anyone he wanted with a slap of his hand, then it hardly matters how many people rise against him.

            4. If that happens here, then they die. Common sense. You made no point here.

            5. Oh look, another false analogy. The entire reason Christians still existed after God died is because 1. theres an afterlife which means there’s incentive to believe and 2. the entire point of Jesus is that he died for everyone’s sins. People worship Nephis because she gives them hope they can escape. If she dies, all that hope is gone because they assumed she could save them. Her existence is vital. Jesus’ existence is sacrificial

1 first dude that sunny killed by cold blood and who did everything to return to the lord's grace but still didn't like the idea of other ppl dying bc of his selfish ideas

              It's harper

              2. You need a reason to be in the right, on paper she only helped the outsiders, that's why he made use of the sitiation with effie to destroy the opposition
Understanding that nephis was plotting something was never the problem

              3. They can and they could in the past, but humans are resources who are needed, killing half of your population aint smart (especially after knowing that the other side still has powerful ppl so it wouldn't be won without a sacrefice) nor is it a waterproof plan that no one will oppose you again

              4. Yeah you made no sense here, almost like you don't get that ppl with irrational thoughts hardly think abt consequences
You'll go nowhere with using only rational thoughts to explain human behaviors...

              5. Almost like you still don't get the point of a martyr? I used jesus bc it can be said that most stories about opposition were effected from that story (atleast in the west), not bc they're simular

Man just don't reply if you can't understand the simple fact that killing the leader ≠ crushing an idea

                1. Harper was a random cog in the system who wouldn’t dare disobey his masters. It hardly matters if he was ruled by fear or devotion because he was powerless but from what I remember, he was pretty scared.

                2. Dude, isn’t this entire conflict going to happen because he decided to frame the muscular chick? Let’s say that yeah he needs a reason to be in the right. He literally just made one up. Why couldn’t he do so earlier when he recognized she was a threat?

                3. I didn’t say he should kill half his population. If you’re going to reply, at least read what you’re replying to. I said that once he realized Nephis would be a threat, he should’ve executed her and her close supporters. Meaning he shouldn’t have ever let her become this powerful.

                4. What are you having trouble understanding. Use. Common. Sense. My point is they’ll die if they try to fight. It’s very simple. You don’t need to act like a pseudo-intellectual and go on about irrationality to understand that there’s a massive disparity in power between Gunlaug and the outer ring. If they don’t fight, cool. If they do, they die. Nothing more to my point here.

                5. Without Nephis, her dream is impossible. People followed her because they saw her survive fighting the monsters and so they assumed that as long as she was there, she could help them all fight through the monsters as well and they could leave. If she dies, it’s over. The person that was supposed to help them escape is gone. If you build a cult of personality and the personality dies, the cult loses focus. A few may grieve her but if Gunlaug were to kill her early in her campaign, she 1. wouldn’t have even gotten as popular and 2. would’ve proven that she wouldn’t actually be able to lead them out of the Nightmare.

Holy shit it has been 300 chapters! And the damn story is still stuck at them being sleepless. Practically, the beginning of the story! I’ve been patient for the past couple hundred chapters, but at this point I’m not able to hold on any longer. I’m very close to just straight up dropping this novel and move on to a new one! Also, I was spoiled in the comments a few chapters ago. Whoever you are I hope both sides of you pillows are warm you little shit!

The fact that he's a sleepless is the reason why this first adventure is so damn important...

You do get that if everything happened as it normally should happen, sunny would just get the same life as every awakened?

This is important since after this, awakened return only when they sleep if i recal correctly

And his 2nd nightmare should be even harder than the 1st one so he should be stronger than your every day awakaned,

And im sure no one wanna see a random OP character or els this novel should be called "got teleported somwhere in my dream and got OP after 6 months with my unique abb"

What are you waiting for in the real world ? This dream world is the biggest part of the story so how didn't you get that when you've read it up untill now? It aint a magical school novel but an adventure novel
