Chapter 23: Time Traveler

As the mind connected with the Ring of Fate at the moment of its formation, it seemed to soar into the sky as if dreaming, glimpsing the entire world and touching the threads of its essence. Compared to an individual soul, the vastness of the world was immeasurably profound, terrifying, and immense...

However, before Xia De could discern anything further, he was immediately pulled back into his body. Sitting on the sofa, he became fully aware of what he was doing.

Without needing to look back, the meanings of the two Spirit Runes naturally became clear. These two runes represented the qualities of the soul and the world's recognition of existence—things that could not deceive.

"The core rune at the center of the Ring of Fate is typically the brass-colored rune of Enlightenment, at least for ordinary humans. This is because humanity's greatest strength lies in civilization, not any innate uniqueness.

But devout believers favored by gods might, depending on their deity's alignment, receive a golden Miracle or silver Blasphemy rune upon initiation. These individuals are often called 'Chosen Ones' or 'Saints.' On the other hand, those who undergo imperfect initiation processes using Relics might acquire the black iron Whisper rune, though this carries severe risks to the soul."

The doctor explained in a calm, measured tone, gradually drawing Xia De back to reality.

Now that Xia De's initiation was complete, Miss Luisa regained her ability to speak and added,

"Of course, there are exceptions, such as inherited ancestral power, but that has nothing to do with ordinary folks like us."

Xia De nodded. Seeing him glance at them, Dr. Schneider gestured for him to take a sip of tea.

"Your complexion isn't great, which is normal. Forging the Ring of Fate involves reshaping the soul, and pain is to be expected. It will take a few days of rest to alleviate. I didn’t feel anything at first, but that night, I couldn’t sleep due to the agonizing sensation of someone hammering gas pipes in my head."

Although Xia De didn’t feel particularly unwell, he followed the doctor’s advice, picking up his teacup and letting the warm steam waft over his face.

"So, Dr. Schneider, Miss Luisa, how many core runes are normal?"

Because of the voice in his mind, the outsider dared not assume he was typical and thus hesitated to draw conclusions about the usual number of core runes.

At this moment, Xia De was trying hard to suppress the joy of successfully accessing the mystical, maintaining a basic level of rationality and vigilance. He had gained their trust and couldn't afford to reveal anything unusual.

The doctor gave him a knowing look.

"Core Spirit Runes are generally no more than three, with academy data showing over 80% of cases involving two. After all, no soul has only one distinctive quality. That said, there are exceptions. The record is seven core runes, seen in 306 of the Sixth Epoch’s universal calendar by a warlock at Zarasvin Academy."

Xia De could no longer feign indifference and instead showed genuine astonishment.

"What rank of Warlock did they achieve?"

The blonde author shrugged.

"No one knows. That person was a minor figure in history and not even properly named. Oh, I see your point, but the number of core runes has little to do with one’s achievements. The doctor here is a typical example..."

The doctor then revealed his complete Ring of Fate, with two brass-colored core runes: Light of the Mind and Dreams.

"To clarify, these stand for 'dreams' and 'light of the mind.' Simpler concepts often yield multiple interpretations, enabling the development of diverse arcane arts and miracles. Personally, I find Dreams stronger."

Since Spirit Runes use ancient languages, the doctor explained further, unaware that Xia De had already deciphered them at a glance.

"I have three core runes, though it’s nothing special."

Miss Luisa then showcased her own ring, accompanied by white steam and the echo of a hammer strike. A square-sectioned brass ring appeared with three core runes: The Writer, The Performer, and Another Princess. She explained the meanings of her runes, emphasizing that The Writer was her most practical rune, aligning perfectly with her profession as an author. She excelled in the brass-colored element of Enlightenment, adept at drawing strength from stories and legends.

"The languages of Spirit Runes come from past eras. If no translation method is available, the rune’s meaning must be inferred from its owner, who inherently understands it. So, Xia De, what are your runes?"

By demonstrating their own abilities, the doctor and Miss Luisa sought to reassure Xia De, showing that there was no need to hide. Core runes often dictated one’s academy and field of study post-enrollment.

"Space-Time and Silver Moon."

After some thought, Xia De decided there was no reason to conceal this information. Upon hearing the words, Dr. Schneider and Miss Luisa both displayed startled expressions. Xia De couldn’t help but feel a faint sense of pride, though he tried to suppress his excitement.

"Those are incredibly broad concepts. That’s excellent... Regarding Silver Moon, the academy has many records, and it’s relatively straightforward to develop a variety of arcane arts from it. This rune is rare but not obscure. As for Space-Time, are you sure it’s not Time or Space individually?"

The doctor leaned forward inquisitively.

"I’m certain."

Xia De nodded. While he had not encountered a cliché moment of breaking a test crystal due to excessive talent, it was clear that his aptitude was anything but ordinary. Controlling his emotions, he displayed measured curiosity rather than delving too deeply, aware that these two runes seemed particularly significant, especially Silver Moon.

"Don’t smile," he reminded himself.

"Has Space-Time never appeared before?" he asked.

The doctor and Miss Luisa exchanged glances before the latter explained,

"Of course, it has, but it’s exceedingly rare. Recorded cases of individuals with such a core rune are fewer than five. Even when counting all Warlocks who gained the Space-Time rune post-initiation through encounters with the mystical and ancient knowledge, the total likely doesn’t exceed 100."

The doctor looked at Xia De with a hint of hesitation.

"If it were just Silver Moon, we’d recommend you join the School of Mathematics, as you might become an expert in miracles and runes. But with Space-Time, you’re almost guaranteed to join the School of History. You’d fit perfectly as an investigator, exploring the secrets of the past and delving into fallen Old Gods’ mysteries. Even if I don’t recommend it, the professors in History won’t let you go elsewhere.

Venturing into the past will bring greater risks, but you’ll uncover more truths...including the secrets of fallen Old Gods."
