Growing up in poverty, Sunny never expected anything good from life. However, even he did not anticipate being chosen by the Nightmare Spell and becoming one of the Awakened — an elite group of people gifted with supernatural powers.

Transported into a ruined magical world, he found himself facing against terrible monsters — and other Awakened — in a deadly battle of survival.

What’s worse, the shadow powers he received happened to possess a small, but potentially fatal side effect… Collapse

Great novel, but I personally hate it I made it to chapter 350 before I stop reading it because it’s felt like he made very few decisions of his own free will by the last fight in the second nightmare and the ending of that fight pissed me off so I stop reading l.

That’s just my personal feelings. It seems like a great novel.

I picked the novel back up and regretted it Sunny go’s into his nightmare to become a master and he needs his whole team but
so I came to the conclusion that I hate this novel and regret my time I spent on the novel.

I have no problem with people being stronger than the mc but what is happening is completely bullshit and he fells like canon fodder even to people without a divine aspect

No idea what you are talking about the only person who betrayed the mc was that one girl who ultimately made a decision that only helped Sunny and the other person you might be talking about makes you seem absolutely crazy because what they did saved the mc’s life and let him get much stronger

If a person got bullied which later made them into politics to help people like themself and evuntally become a president, they sure as hell won't thank the bully for his great help in making him president right?

Just because thing work out (because of plot armor) doesnt mean what she did was right or even worth forgiveness. Especially since MC is still
      due to her betrayal.

It's funny because I see people making this mistake, BTW how did sunny forgive/forget someone that made him an eternal slave? Maybe he wanted to be a slave deep down... Loool

How does becoming a slave mean saving his life? Did nephis die in the dream realm? No, so ultimately he just became a slave for free.

They try to act logical but it's funny, i wonder how they delude themselves into thinking being a slave was the best choice for sunny... Kids that don't want to be responsible for their own lifes.

Anyway I liked this novel and I came to ask, is sunny still a slave or he broke free?
Is he still trying to break Free or he's now nephis bitch and doesn't want to break freep? Did he fall in love with his master?

One of the MC's main abilities is that he can materialise and manipulate corporeal shadows. A much more interesting route would have been manipulating shadows in order to trick vision, evade and (mis)direct attention.

Corporeal shadows as a core ability is lazy writing.

Story and characters are similarly immature and shallow.

Can be summed up by "trashy young adult fiction". (still read 1200 chapters though...)

Edit: (note that although this comment has 24 dislikes at the time of this edit, there's not one reply disagreeing or even critiquing the review)

What you mention as the MC's possible power is something Sunny can already do. That the MC hasn't thought of it or hasn't tried it is another thing.
As for lazy writing due to corporeal shadows, I think it's one of the most OP powers you can have and even more OP when you take into account his divine lantern.
Immature story? How far did you actually read?

A shadow is the relative absence of light. Material shadows are metaphysically inaccurate. Furthermore the author contrasts and opposes shadows against darkness which is some schizo shit.

How far into my comment did you read? Are you illiterate? In the comment you replied to it was stated that I read 1200 chapters at the time of writing the comment.

I don't think you pay attention when you read. During the Antarctica arc, when Sunny confronts the beetles, the author gives a short explanation of why the TRUE DARKNESS, and shadows, are enemies. In this world, TRUE DARKNESS and ordinary darkness are not the same, as TRUE DARKNESS is the blood of a Void Being (Sunny's Third Nightmare).
As for the metaphysically exact, are you stupid? Sunny's Aspect says that he is a DIVINE SHADOW with miraculous powers. Also add all the things of the soul and you come to the conclusion that you are a fool. In addition, the Spell gives and scientifically inexplicable powers to the Awakened Ones.

Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It's a way of understanding it.
That is to say, good literature should be a conduit of wisdom.

It's in literature that true life can be found. It's under the mask of fiction that you can tell the truth.
What truth can be found in or under this work of fiction?

I am not comparing Shadow Slave to shitty webnovels but literature of virtue.

Darkness is characterised by the absence of light, and similarly shadows are the blockage of light. You could make the analogy that "true darkness" is when we perceive ourselves to be in an environment with the total absence of light and that shadows are cast when light that is cast is partially blocked. You should follow that that shadows are partial blockage of light or that absolute darkness is the absence of light in an area but at the same time they are degrees or variations to the absence of the same perturbations. The perturbation of light.

If one could separate shadow from light and bring shadow to darkness, in reality that would be by bringing darkness to light and the shadow it casts by extinguishing the light that is casting the shadow, all that was previously illuminated would be darkness, and the area that was previously shadow would now be the same from the rest of darkness, one could observe the same phenomena by bringing an object that stands out and blocks light into darkness.

There can be no shadow without light. And darkness is the perceived absence of light is I believe the idea that the author is playing with. Why is "absolute darkness" or the absence of the perturbations that we perceive as light, portrayed in this novel as personified evil?

My question to all who disagree with my comments is this:
In what way do the metaphysics of this book relate and inform one of true wisdom and spirituality?

This novel is not about spiritualism or wisdom. It's just a web novel created to entertain. I don't understand why get so deep. What does this have to do with wisdom? The main purpose is to entertain the reader, no more, no less.

That's exactly what I meant by it being immature, shallow and nonsensical.

I never denied that this sort of media is often entertaining. It is why webnovels exist; but such media only distracts you and is an escape from the reason you are seeking entertainment, rather than reconciling you with it. Good literature should immerse its audience and be of benefit to them. For the aforementioned reasons this webnovel (as do most) fall short of that goal. Oftentimes this intentional, as it avoids challenging the reading and makes for easy and puerile reading.

The Iliad through spelling, breathes life into tradition long dead.
It might've been The Odysee, which reads more like a mythological story, rather than The Iliad that was mentioned in Shadow Slave.

What is The Iliad About? Set in the Bronze Age, The Iliad provides a historical look at how society in this time view morality and heroism. Many philosophers believed that the Bronze Age was a time of moral and artistic superiority in which humans worked in tandem with the gods and were punished for going against the gods. Because of this, many humans lived up to values that were godly in nature—heroic qualities such as super-human strength, bravery, honesty, etc. were coveted above all else. To live like a god would live meant that a human had high moral superiority.

Furthermore, although the Trojan year was believed to be fictious for a long time, there is now archeological evidence that Troy really existed and possibly did fall to the Greeks. This gives the poem a historical context as well that not only helps people understand the oral tradition of storytelling and the values of these ancient people but the social and political context in which they operated. The Iliad and The Odyssey are two of the greatest examples of the epic poem genre to this day for this reason.

In comparison to the classics. Shadow Slave is sterile and safe and panders to its audience. It does not meaningfully address class, what defines nobility, divinity, nor reality.

"To bring it back to the ancient Greks, who looked to Homer’s Iliad as their bible, it’s important to remember that the men we call heroes in the Iliad were KINGS of their respective city-states. Odysseus was a king, Achilles a king. They were a confederation of kings who had Agamemnon as their leader because he ruled over the most men. This was the convention of the Greks at the time. Yes, of course, they were heroes, but they were heroes because they were elite, because they were kings. To be excellent by nature was required by the elite of the time. It was a quality impressed upon from father to son. To be the best.

The advice of the Grek fathers to their sons leaving for the Trojan War was to be the bravest and most pre-eminent. To not shame the race of his fathers. Peleus said this to his son, Achilles. Bravery requires no explanation, I’ve talked about the bravery of Achilles already. Pre-eminent is an interesting translation. It meant they wanted their sons to be the best above all others. To be more. To be better. To surpass all others. To prove themselves superior.

This isn’t something that comes from nothing. For Achilles to prove himself superior in the Trojan War meant that the work had already been done. His father had laid the foundations of it by having the young Achilles trained by Cheiron in the wilderness. He learned true nature. The Trojan War was merely his test. The proving of his aristeia. The movie sort of pays tribute to this idea when Achilles is asked why he came to Troy, and what made him better than all the others, to which he replies that he wanted what all men want, but that he wanted it more.

Too much gets focused on Achilles’ lineage as excuse for his excellence. That he was the son of a Goddess, of course, they often forget he is also the grandson of Zeus. All the heroes of the Trojan War were descended from The Gods. So what? Achilles proved himself better than them all still. Hector is appealing because he resembles the modern idea of what is a hero, but Hector was also a descendant of Zeus. Now, lineage matters. Being wellborn was and is important for the type of man you want to create, but don’t use it to excuse what truly made Achilles great. It was he who all Greks desired to become above all others."

Shadow Slave does pay tribute to the greek epics, with legacies and lineages, trials and divinity. But it cops out by cucking to modern sensibilities, pandering to women warriors, for instance, and shitty webnovel/ pop culture "metaphysics" (the aforementioned corporeal shadows). The classics are heavy of tradition and are truly epic. Shadow Slave is neither, but fills it's void with mcguffins of lacking symbolism and by being "kewl&edgy".

I do not see Sunny ever freeing himself of being a Shadow Slave, raping Nephis into liberation from her egoic attachments, elevating her to transmute or subdue the spell, then ascending to his throne to be Agamemnon or king of the gods. If the above or something equivalent does happen I'll eat my words.

These Homeric epics inspire to greatness. They exhort man to divinity. We are immersed in greek history and tradition - among the greatest in history. How has Shadow Slave influenced you?

P.s. how tf do I stop "Shadow Slave" formatting itself to capitilization and a link?

Shadow Slave takes inspiration from greek classics and european fables, so I believe it is somewhat appropriate to, if not hold it to so high a standard, at least draw some comparisons.

There are exceptions to the shitty webnovel rule. I haven't considered it deeply, but Beware Of Chicken, for instance, is a cut above the rest.

Homer wishes to impart upon us the virtues of these great characters. By conducting themselves according to the principles of their traditions and the exemplars in the epics, many greeks and also modern men hold themselves to the standards of true aristocracy, heroes and gods.

For reference, please google variations of "ancient greek" "rape" "mythology" and "gods".

Look at the example of Cronos eating his children. There is an element to god that is insane. The snake eating its own tail.

Divine madness or crazy wisdom means liberation from mortal trappings, including and perhaps especially cultural sensibilities. Sunny subduing Nephis, if you prefer it pg-13, demonstrates liberation from or the subduing of the spell; which is Nephis's apparent "goal".

This frees her from the compulsion to "defeat" the spell, taking such burdens upon herself. By doing so he serves his master to the fullest whilst at the same time breaking free from slavery. He breaks her down to then lift her up.

It seems I was asking too much of ranobes commenters. I suppose I'll have to spell it out.

The epics pay you back for the attention you pay towards them, by directing it to that which is higher than the reader, and exhorts them not to merely admire those ideals and men, but to live up to them. It reconciles the readers by reaching through the annals of history, transmuting the fourth wall into a conduit of their traditions and philosophy(love of wisdom).

What is your way of being? Do you love wisdom?

As for rape and modern sensibilities, in current year our times are far more degenerated than theirs, with ugliness as opposed to beauty, propaganda to the epics, and we would certainly not lose to them in terms of sex trafficking, rape and indentured servitude.

The current ideals? What may those be?

Clearly, You didn't digest my previous reply properly, I shall similarly spell it out for you.

Why is it better for readers of current time live up to the clearly outdated living ideals of ancient times, that have clearly been glorified similar to the current "propagandas"?

Why does the consumption of their traditions and philosophy reconciles us with the reason why we are seeking entertainment? You once again answered Incompletely, saying how not why.

And even then, why is your how right?

Is it because we can somewhat understand the lives of the character we observe in the stories, enabling us to live a pseudo-life in their world, giving us experiences that we would otherwise never have, changing us drastically, for both better and worse? But isn't that common in every single piece of literature?

What is your way of being?

I find that information to be quite personal.

                  Do you love wisdom?

I find this question to be paradoxical in nature, with the answer changing by how one defines wisdom.

As for rape and modern sensibilities, in current year our times are far more degenerated than theirs, with ugliness as opposed to beauty, propaganda to the epics, and we would certainly not lose to them in terms of sex trafficking, rape and indentured servitude.

While the current times may not be perfect, but it is the best of the ones humans as a species has ever experienced, with the above sentence being supported by countless data like life expectancy, personal happiness, personal safety and more.

May I know what acts as a base to your above quote? Preferably with substantial evidence.

The current ideals? What may those be?

The ideals that results in the guarantee of survival and betterment of ones own self's standards of living and/or of the humanity as a whole.

Good literature exhorts one to live an examined life with love of wisdom. Opposed to that are works that feed the delusions of the reader in a way that will lead to suffering. Many prefer delusions, a la Plato's cave or flies to shit.

I find that information to be quite personal.

In that case this discussion is a waste of time and energy. This will be my last reply.

I find this question to be paradoxical in nature, with the answer changing by how one defines wisdom.

One form of wisdom is direct experience. A blossoming of maturity and virtue.

The ideals that results in the guarantee of survival and betterment of ones own self's standards of living and/or of the humanity as a whole.

People work more hours in our industrialised societies than they did throughout most of history. Suicide rates are also higher. IQ rates have dropped 1~ point a decade since around the industrial revolution. Most jobs are "fake", as in the work exists to give the worker work or a place in the system.

As for rape and modern sensibilities, in current year our times are far more degenerated than theirs, with ugliness as opposed to beauty, propaganda to the epics, and we would certainly not lose to them in terms of sex trafficking, rape and indentured servitude.

Ugliness compared to beauty should be clear without my explanation.

Are you aware of Edward Bernays and his influence? How about Epstein? When somebody is hung, the blood builds up in the head until it forces its way out. Eyes pop out, eardrums burst and blood gushes out, the tongue swells purple out of the mouth and the face turns purple. Tell me, is that what Epstein's "corpse" looked like? How could a Mossad agent conduct a blackmail pedophile sex trafficking ring rubbing elbows with the elites of America and Europe for decades, and then fake his death to be wheeled out of prison never to be seen again?

Modern human trafficking and child exploitation is much more rampant that one imagines.
How many children do you think have gone missing in Ukraine under the cover of war? Who examines cargo hold of Emirates which is owned by the Saudi royal family? Why do you think pedophiles get a slap on the wrist? In many countries human trafficking isn't even investigated by their equivalent of homeland security. https://youtu.be/lKp7ste7g0g

The situation in South Africa is outright genocide, the Afrikaners are driven off land and the Bantus then starve. Jewish vassal states aggregating "first world" political establishments fan these flames by spreading degeneracy, pushing drugs and proliferating criminals on the alter of democracy and equality. What people fail to understand is that inequality is a moralising force. Of course, the suffering of those mentioned above is karmic.

Story is very promising...World Background is also great ....but it's just that author shows MC as weak ....like always ....and even if mc (in mongrel form ) does amazing things ....no one knows that it's mc right ....so ...it's just that it leaves a bad taste somehow ...
