In fairness, the katana is indeed a magnificent weapon. The Japanese had awful iron, and had to make the best of it. They designed what became a magnificent weapon and very good at what it was intended for.

That's not to say other swords of other cultures were not as good. Look at the gladius. Although it was just one part of a weapon system not standalone, it existed for centuries virtually unchanged, for a reason. It was perfect for its time.

A Messer? A Spanish Rapier? An arming sword? Each beautiful weapons and designed well for its time and purpose.

What about if there was some zombie apocalypse? Me? i'D likely choose a shorter cutlass. Rugged blade, heavy enough for good chopping and not useless in a stab. Short enough to be used in tight spaces and not getting in the way while sneaking and running.

A fantasy world with formal duels? A rapier. I wouldn't carry something that big in ordinary life, but it is the best historical in unarmored person v person.

Everyday carry weapon? My glock 26 Oops. Sorry we were talking swords.. Something with not too much guard, light and shorter. Something like a chinese jian is ideal.

There's nothing wrong with showing pride in your culture and its history.
