Empires rise and fall on the Yulan Continent. Saints, immortal beings of unimaginable power, battle using spells and swords, leaving swathes of destruction in their wake. Magical beasts rule the mountains, where the brave — or the foolish — go to test their strength. Even the mighty can fall, feasted on by those stronger. The strong live like royalty; the weak strive to survive another day.

This is the world which Linley is born into. Raised in the small town of Wushan, Linley is a scion of the Baruch clan, the clan of the once-legendary Dragonblood Warriors. Their fame once shook the world, but the clan is now so decrepit that even the heirlooms of the clan have been sold off. Tasked with reclaiming the lost glory of his clan, Linley will go through countless trials and tribulations, making powerful friends but also deadly enemies.

Come witness a new legend in the making. The legend of Linley Baruch! Collapse

Damn it. I want to read some good xianxia, but... I don’t want to read Tomat because of his lame love story (and tragedies). I don’t want to read Er Gen for about the same reason (and also boring), I don’t want to read something like the Martial God of Asura or the God of Martial Arts, because I feel like I’m degrading while reading it. I don’t want to read Ni Kang Tian, because his plot twists are freezing, all sorts of evil MCs are also going through the woods. Silkworm seems to be not bad, but it is too monotonous; in some moments you can accurately predict the development of events of ten chapters in advance. The Cow's Cocoon is top, but I haven't found any of his other works other than the two that I've already read. There is some hope for Tian Jia Xian Shao, but his only work that I started reading didn’t appeal to me much, but it seems to be very different from the others.
Does anyone know any other decent xianxia? Yes, all sorts of systems are also extremely undesirable. They ruin the whole atmosphere.

Well, this is an epic novel. Naturally, Linley outlives his family since thousands and thousands of years go by. As for the "death of loved ones"
I'm pretty sure that was it, it's been years since I've read this.

Well, and Linley had a girlfriend

    Alright, review time!
Do you want to read the best novel ever?! Well this isn’t it.

Do you want to read a well done cultivation novel that helped kickstart the webnovel scene in the west? This is it.

I read Coiling Dragon Ring 9 years ago when it was being translated on a small site called Wuxiaworld. It introduced me to the world of Chinese webnovels. It’s fun and easy to read with one of the best translations ever done. The story is typical because IET is one of the pioneers of this genre. It has a great main character with solid pacing and a decent ending.

Purely analytical I could probably give this novel a 4 and that’s the translation pushing that number up. From a personal perspective I’d give it a 5 so inbetween I’d say it’s a solid 4.5.

I’ve read this novel half a dozen times beginning to end and I love it every time.

P.S. check my profile for more novels to read it you like this one.

Maybe not best novel ever, but it's pretty much best cultivation/cn novel, at at least in top 5. Both this and Swallowed star are really good cultivation novels with unique settings, pretty good world building and characters. And there's no infatuating stupidity/forced plot or over reliance in cliches. Also both stories centers have manageable cast of characters that stick around for quite a while. Other IET works are pretty bland and uninteresting.

I have read a bit of the manga, not the novel (name is Panlong). Seems really for young teens, MC got thick plot armor and power burst like Naruto to get out of though fights, from what I remember, and the plot seemed rigged with holes. But perhaps is it to have a really fast pace in the manga, idk.
Personally, I won't read it, so I can't be more helpful, sorry.

This is a common problem with manga, generally for a manga taht came from a novel like this one to avoid plot hole, they need around 4 "manga chapter" for 1 "novel chapter". meaning chapter 80 of the manga should be chapter 20 of the novel. Thats almost never the case.

As for this novel, i've read it several years ago so don't take my word for it but it's one of the better cultivation novel out there. If you've read "desolate era", "stellar transformation" or "swallowed star" you should know the level of writing to expect, but it's definitly not one of those cringe first time writer who make a plot hole every 3 sentences.

It's also one of the first novel to have been translated and one of the novel that made the translation of chinese novel so popular.

I feel that the level is close enough that there are no right answer, at the time of reading I enjoyed coiling dragon more than warlock in a magus world (i mean, i read all of coiling dragon and i stopped around book 5 of wmw/ chapter 800+
            )

But i was 14 at the time of reading, almost a decade ago, if I were to re-read now, i'll probably like wmw more than coiling dragon.

It's an old novel. If you're looking for a system, fast power-up, OP mc with a harem, then this is not for you. This is a classic story of how the MC slowly becomes strong and the personality of the MC is also very generic. It's my first novel since many years ago and I really enjoyed it. It's not the best story out there but it is a good read.

Many people will think that it is boring after a while since it really is very generic, but it is at least one of the few better Xianxia out there. It's worth the read.
